Automate failed payment follow-ups for subscriptions
Retries can recover failed card payments, but some customers still need a human note. A scheduled agent reads the day's failures, groups them by reason and age, and drafts follow-ups its department head reviews and you approve.

What you get
Sample, not live data. Customers, amounts and reasons are invented.
Failed payments, 5 Nov (sample)
3 need a note, 2 still retrying (left out).
| Customer | Amount | Reason | Retries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acme Studio | 49.00 | Expired card | 3 |
Draft (needs your approval)
"Hi, your card ending 4242 expired. You can update it here..."
Where retries stop
Stripe Billing can automatically retry failed subscription and invoice payments, but some customers still need a human note. Those are the customers retries have not fixed. Without a routine, they linger until the subscription cancels, and the cause is often a simple expired card the customer would fix in a minute if asked. Check how many failures in a week were an expired card versus a real decline, so you know which wording to use.
How the scheduled job works
You add the job and connect read access to your Stripe account through a remote MCP server (Beta) you set up. Each day a scheduled agent lists invoices with a failed payment, notes how many retries have happened and the decline reason, and leaves out customers whose next retry is still pending. For the rest it drafts a short, plain email with the amount, the reason in everyday words, and where to update the card. The agent reads and drafts. It sends nothing and changes nothing in Stripe.
Review and approval
The COO agent, as department head, reviews the drafts before anything goes out: is the amount right, does the tone fit, is any customer listed who has already paid or has a retry pending. Then you approve, edit or skip each email, and nothing reaches a customer until you do. Start by reading every draft, and loosen your review once the opening weeks look right.
Keeping it respectful
A payment failure is not a customer failure. Keep the wording helpful and short, avoid threats, and offer a way to reply. Decide in advance after how many days you want the list to flag a customer for a personal message from you instead of a template. Track how many customers fixed their card after a note, so you know if the wording works.
